You now have your harps, mic, amp, water, etc. Let's first focus on a jam session... we'll later speak as if it's your gig.

When signing up, make it clear what you're going to do. If you sing you're more likely to be able to choose the song and lead the band; this ensures you're not put into a situation of playing a song/key/form you know nothing about. To do this put your name down and then write something like “lead song” so it’s clear you’re ready to drive the band. If you don’t have a song in mind and want to just sit in, still give them parameters. Again, if you don’t say anything you may have to play to a song/key/form you know nothing about. Think of a groove you’re comfortable with and let them know it (“hey guys... I feel comfortable with a shuffle... can we do a shuffle?”); this is essential.
