Old Timey Thing

Playing around with making a foot pedal and ended up with an old bass drum pedal that needed some repairs. Then I took a magnum size wooden wine box and used it for the drum. Stuffed it with a towel and put a mouse pad on it , both to dampen the sound. I find it uncomfortable to do the foot stomp thing but so thought I'd try this. So far I'm happy with the sound and the ease of use.

The harp is just improvised one take stuff. Now to work on guitar, harp in a rack and on to One Man Band busking!! TOTALLY JOKING!!

Gary's Blues

Hi all,

This is my first time sharing with everyone, so be gentle...I've been playing a long time but mostly learned on my own and frankly, learned some bad habits which I'm trying to correct. I've been a pucker player so all the TB stuff is new and for some reason, I've had trouble with the pulls. This song is fun and I know I've flubbed a few notes, but any helpful suggestions on my use of tongue flutters, slaps and pulls, as well as general tone would be helpful.

FYI, I'm playing with a Blues Blaster mic straight into GarageBand and adding reverb and distortion.

Thanks all! continue reading...

Double Trouble

Used a Jimi Lee backing track -Groovetrax - and an A harp for both parts. The guitar solos feature ridiculously over the top rock-god style wailing to disguise my bad guitar playing. I really like the harmony stuff that Gary and David do in the video submissions so this is an excuse to have a go at creating a head with two harp parts. Also there's a great track (hell, they're ALL great tracks) on Flavio Guimaraes' CD 'Flavio and Friends' called Jamming with the Nightcats which features a great two-harp head. There's a YouTube sample here at 3:38:

Walter's Boogie

Here's my version of "Walter's Boogie." I used "Walter Shuffle in E" from Jimi Lee's Groove Trax for the backing track. I had to splice the unaccompanied opening onto the front. I used David's transcription from the newsletter, and listened to Walter's 1970s recording from the album "Can't Stop Loving You" as well as David's recording from the "History of the Blues Harmonica" CD. I listened to Walter's 1950s recording too, which is great also.

I found this tune very challenging. It's great for working on slaps and pulls, and on controlled bends.

Mean Old World

Cover of the Little Walters 'Mean Old World' (with the help of the book 'Blues Harmonica collection' by David McKelvy - full of transcribed hits, though sometimes seems not so accurate or maybe I don't listen to the correct recordings)

Crossover B-flat. Hey, those B-flats seem to have been very popular! :-) (Help Me by Sonny Boy II comes to my mind as another utilizing B-flat)
