Mastering the essential skill of embossing (aka: sizing, burnishing) reed plate slots is a worthy endeavor for every serious Harp Tech. I, nor will you ever tire of the thrill of playing a harmonica that was successfully embossed.

Embossing refers to the process of calibrating the reed clearance tolerances to perfectly match the Musician’s playing style. The space between the reed plate, and reed is reduced to increase the air pressure—with less effort from the player (sort of like pinching the end of a garden hose to increase the flow of water pressure).

Since April, I have embossed hundreds of reed plate slots with the new Richard Sleigh Reed Slot Customizing Tool—there is no going back, I am spoiled! After working with a tool that afforded me so much control and precision, I can’t imagine embossing another set of reed plates without it.
