As cold weather sets in, think of your mic's comfort and well-being as well as your own.

Like so many delicate techno-electrical devices, microphones should be given top consideration with regards to their exposure to the elements. Whatever the fragility of the coatings, housing, and finish of a microphone, concern for the operative components (THE ELEMENT or CAPSULE) should be paramount . Durability of various designs ranges dramatically: Dynamics and the CM/CR designs are TUFF; Crystals don't even wait for an excuse to go bye-bye.
While moisture and impact are among the major enemies of crystal harpmics in action, heat would top the list of liabilities they face while in transit and storage. Winter? While not parking them near the heater is a wise choice, know that condensation can form as they pass through dramatic transitions in temperature.
Whatever your choice of harpmics might be, you and they will benefit when you protect them from environmental extremes at home and on the job. "Bubble wrap" is everywhere, and the stuff you don't pop makes a great shock absorber for mics in transit. On the bandstand, stashing your mic in a golf club cover might save it when you-know-who trips over your cable. As for the moisture/condensation issue, storing your mic in a zip-loc plastic bag helps to stabilize its environment.
If it could, your harpmic would thank you...
