After waiting in our local public library's on-line queue for a couple of months, I finally was able to check out Mike Edison's Sympathy for the Drummer: Why Charlie Watts Matters (Backbeat Books, 2019). A wonderful read. I couldn't put it down, and finished it within days of picking it up. Written prior to Watts' death last summer, it's an outstanding tribute to an outstanding musician. Even if you're not a drummer (and I'm not), there's a ton of great history in the book, including notes about the Chicago blues greats (and jazz players) who influenced Watts, especially Chess stalwart Fred Below. If you can get your hands on a copy, grab it and enjoy!
