Hi Fritz, I have an Astatic T3 shell - the innards are long gone but the shell is in extremely good condition ie the grill and bullet body are not scratched or dented - its a really great looking mic with no frills. I really like it's fit into my hands so is it a good idea to send it to a customiser to put in wiring, a new element and volume control or should I keep the shell for display and get a ready made mic?

Greetings

Greetings Philharmonic,
You've sold me on the T3 being an ideal mic for your needs. Solid, two-piece cast grill/shell combo in bright chrome, smaller than a JT30. Even tho slippery chrome, the rim of the grill helps in keeping a grip on it. Likely you've sold yourself on the concept of putting it to work as well. If by "innards" you mean the original element's gone bye-bye, that's no surprise. If you mean the tilt and tensioning mechanism along with the stem and MC-3 connector are gone as well, all the better! You could install both your element of choice and your output connector of choice. It's all do-able.
