Practice Schedule
6 years is a relatively short period of time to become as accomplished as you have. I believe you mentioned that you averaged 2-3 hours of practice per day. With that in mind, roughly when did you notice a breakthrough (i.e. full length songs no longer took months to learn, you could hum a tune and quickly piece it together on the harmonica, and etc.), was it after 2 years, 3 years, 4 years?

Hi Bugworks, good question. I asked the same question of David Barrett and other top harp players during my first few years of playing.
I don't think there was a single breakthrough or "aha" moment. There were many small breakthroughs that happened over a period of time, especially in the first three years. Generally I found that learning one skill or technique helped me move on to a different one quickly. The same is true of songs; learning songs like "Easy" or "Juke" helped me later when I worked other tunes because I was able to quickly incorporate elements from them into my new learning.
In terms of a timeline, I would say that I got the feeling that things were starting to fall into place around two years into my practice. At that time, yes, I was putting in 2-3 hours of practice a day.
I hope this answers your question! Good luck with your practice.
