What are all the scales & modes for the 12 positions on the harmonica.
Is there a Mixolydian Mode and blues scale in 2nd position.
And is there a major or minor penatonic in 2nd position.

1st - Major (Ionian Mode)

2nd - Major (Mixolydian Mode) "blues"

3rd - Minor (Dorian Mode)

4th - Minor (Aeolian Mode)

5th - Minor (Phrygian Mode)

6th - Diminished (Locrian Mode)

7th -

8th -

9th -

10th -

11th -

12th - Major (Lydian Mode)

Answer

You can play any mode/solo scale in each of these positions, just like any other instrument... though each position will have particular modes/scales it does better with than others. 1st, 2nd and 3rd does the best, though 12th is interesting. 2nd Position is the most versatile. For the Blues player the two modes needed are the Blues Scale and Major Pentatonic Scale (or Major Scale).

A good book explaining all this is "C harmonica book by James Major melBay publications".For only 8 dollars you get a lot of informations about scales, modes and positions.

You may also check out my homepage for the note layout when playing with a specific harmonica, in a specific position and specific scale. Here the link: www.bluesharpmusic.com ---->bluesharp links----> harmonica keys and scales.
